“The Power of Fun”

The Power of Fun - Why fun is the key to a happy and healthy life by Catherine Price is a well-researched and informative book that provides a convincing argument for the importance of fun in our lives. Price argues that fun is not just a frivolous activity, but that it is essential for our happiness and health. And I would argue that it's essential for artists to keep creativity open and flowing!

There are many benefits to having fun, including:

  • Improved mood: Fun can help to reduce stress, anxiety, and depression.

  • Increased creativity: Fun can help us to think more creatively and solve problems more effectively.

  • Enhanced learning: Fun can help us to learn new things more easily and retain information better.

  • Stronger relationships: Fun can help us to build stronger relationships with our friends, family, and colleagues.

  • Better health: Fun can help to reduce our risk of chronic diseases, such as heart disease and obesity.

Price also discusses how we can incorporate more fun into our lives. She suggests that we:

  • Set aside time for fun

  • Find activities that we truly enjoy

  • Be open to new experiences

  • Don't be afraid to be silly

Here are some additional thoughts on the book:

  • I appreciated Price's focus on the science of fun. She provides a lot of evidence to support her claims about the benefits of fun, which makes her argument more persuasive. While I enjoy anectodal stories, I appreciate scientific evidence to support and validate personal narratives.

  • I also liked that Price provides practical tips for incorporating more fun into our lives. These tips are specific and easy to follow, which makes them more likely to be effective.

She's also written a book , "How to Break Up with Your Phone: The 30-Day Plan to Take Back Your Life," that looks intriguing. She demonstrates how the time we spend on our smartphones affects our brains—from our ability to focus to our memory—and what we can do to create healthier long-term relationships with our devices. This is on my list to read since I find these devices impact my creativity and being open to inspiration.
